President Reads to Preschoolers

FORT WASHINGTON, PA, March 31, 2009 - J.F. Smith & Associates announced today that Joel F. Smith, President & CEO, joined local business leaders in support of reading in public schools. The program, “Read to Me”, is a collaboration between the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce and the School District of Philadelphia. Smith and over 100 other local business and civic leaders read to over 2,700 kindergarten and pre-K students in 23 schools throughout the School District of Philadelphia.

This was the 5th year of this innovative early literacy storyteller program. The program encourages adults to read to young children. Each participating school receives a donation of hardback books, workshops for teachers and parents and other literacy tools.

Smith read to a class of pre-K students at the B.B. Comegys School in Southwest Philadelphia. This was the fourth year that he participated in the program. He read Wild About Books by Judy Sierra to the class. Comegys is one of the schools managed by Edison Schools.

When asked about the experience, Smith said, “There is no more important thing that we can do for our children than to teach them the joy of reading. The kids were eager to learn and to participate. They gleefully named each of the animals pictured in the book. We, as parents, teachers and business leaders, must find a way to capture that enthusiasm and increase the number of students who continue to achieve and ultimately graduate high school. I also enjoyed the chance to speak with the principal and her staff at Comegys about some of the initiatives that Edison has been using to improve student performance.”
